Seeing the bigger picture
There's something about January that signifies a new beginning. I don't wait until spring to clean out things; I do it the first month of the year.
Once again, I'm challenging myself to become more streamlined, especially when it comes to my Secret Garden Sewing Room. For 2026, my goal is to reduce my inventory of fabrics, kits, and more. Yes, I am indeed streamlining my stash of fabrics, kits, notions, and tools. I've started pulling the items that no longer align with my interests, and my thoughts are to either repurpose the fabrics and/or offer the kits and sewing supplies for sale. Now, I could always donate the items too.
You've heard the saying, 'can't see the forest because of the trees.' This quote is so spot on for me - it's about seeing the bigger picture.
Not everyone can be honest with themselves about acknowledging the simple truth that their tastes have changed. I/we have been embracing that change ever since we moved into this house.
I'm assessing my PhDs - that's a quilter's term for 'projects half done.' I discovered several quilts in various stages of completion. Another 2026 goal is to finish up those quilts and get them sent off for longarm service.
There are special projects that were put on hold because of my hand injury and subsequent surgeries. While I continue to get further along in my recovery process, occupational therapy takes time, and I'm nowhere near being 100%. Think 'the turtle wins the race' when it comes to my hand.
Make a list of realistic goals for yourself and your creative space. Take inventory of what you have - be utterly honest with yourself, does it align with your personal tastes and ideas of what you want to create? Does your creative space feel crowded and give you anxiety? Or is it a beacon of inspiration? If it gives you anxiety, then perhaps it’s time to reduce what you have and to keep what you know that you will actually work with.
