Task lighting

Task lighting, an essential component of every sewing room, is frequently inadequate due to the fact that many rooms were originally designed as bedrooms, typically featuring only a single ceiling light or, in some cases, a ceiling fan with a light.

One year after relocating to our new residence, I decided to repurpose this room as an annex to my Secret Garden sewing room, which subsequently altered my lighting requirements. This room, now designated as the Tea Garden sewing annex, was initially designed as a bedroom according to our builder's plans, and we were only able to install four recessed lights in the ceiling. Furthermore, this room presented a unique challenge due to its slanted ceilings along two sides and a single window that, unlike those in the Secret Garden, did not provide an abundance of natural light. As a result, I rely on unobtrusive task lights in key areas, which are small yet bright.

Many years ago, Ott Light was the premier choice in the quilting world; although they were bulky and expensive, they were highly efficient – as evident in the photos. It is a testament to their quality that, even after 20 plus years, I still possess a few of these lights in various sizes, and they continue to function admirably.

The options available to us have significantly expanded over the past 35 years. With numerous companies now offering their own designs in bright task lighting, there is a diverse range of task lights available in various styles, colors, and sizes, catering to different needs and budgets.

Each machine in my Tea Garden Annex is equipped with its own task light, which illuminates the area surrounding the machine and the fabric being worked on. Some are magnetic, others clip on, and others are floor or table top style.

Where can one find task lights? Amazon offers an impressive selection, as do IKEA and office supply stores. Some sewing centers also carry task lights. It is recommended to explore local options to discover what is available. Check out companies online such as Daylight and Ott for ones that will last years if not decades.
