The importance of wearing Sunscreen

The significance of incorporating sunscreen into one's daily routine cannot be overstated.

As a resident of the South, I can personally attest to the importance of applying sunscreen every day, regardless of the season.

It is crucial to remember to apply sunscreen to frequently overlooked areas, such as the back of the neck, ears, the top of the head, including the part in one's hair or balding areas, the tops of feet, and the backs of hands. Essentially, any part of the skin that is exposed to sunlight necessitates the application of sunscreen.

When selecting a sunscreen, it is essential to opt for a broad-spectrum option, as it provides protection from both UVB and UVA rays. It is vital to remember that sunscreen serves as a screen, rather than a complete barrier, against the sun's rays. If comprehensive protection from the sun is desired, consider investing in hats and clothing that offer UVB and UVA protection. We personally endorse hats manufactured by Solbari, a brand highly recommended by dermatologists.

Apply sunscreen 15 to 20 minutes prior to sun exposure. In other words, do not wait until you are already at the beach, as you will have been exposed to the sun during the car ride and while walking across the sand.

There are morning moisturizers and body lotions that contain SPF 30. Consider incorporating these products into your daily routine. My daily sunscreen has an SPF of 50, although we also have tubes of SPF 70 Sport for days when we are outside working in the garden, driving with the top down, or at the pool. I ensure that my husband uses SPF 70 whenever he is outside, as I want his skin to be as protected as mine.

Many individuals only consider sunscreen during the summer months. However, the sun is present year-round, and it is essential to consider sunscreen at all times. Reapplication is crucial - regardless of the SPF, reapply at least every 2 hours, and reapply sooner if swimming or sweating. Look for a broad-spectrum sunscreen that blocks UVA and UVB rays. I must emphasize the importance of reapplying sunscreen regularly. Set a reminder on your smartphone to alert you when it is time to reapply.

Sadly, there are people who will pay more attention to basting their brisket or a turkey so it does not dry out rather than applying sunscreen to themselves.

There are two types of sunscreen one is chemical and one is mineral. Speak with your dermatologist to determine which one is right for your skin type and sun protection needs

The following information is from The Skin Cancer Foundation.

Dermatologists and health organizations recommend an SPF of at least 30 for daily, incidental sun exposure, and an SPF of 50 or higher for extended outdoor activities.

Sunscreen Guidelines at a Glance: Everyday Use - SPF 30 blocks about 97% of UVB rays and is ideal for daily commuting or incidental exposure.

Extended Outdoor Time - SPF 50 or higher is recommended for beach days, sports, or prolonged exposure, providing slightly higher protection (blocking about 98% of UVB).
