I don’t make crumb quilts, they’re not my thing. I don’t use fabric scraps for pillow stuffing as it makes them too darn heavy, lumpy and they have a tendency to hold moisture and to grow mold and mildew in certain environments. Don’t suggest making pet beds either, that mold and mildew thing really comes into play here.

Those are just a few things that others have suggested for me to do with my nibby fabric scraps. Some people actually called me wasteful and others called me selfish, all for me not wanting to use my fabric scraps for those two purposes.

Here’s the thing- I don’t take kindly to being bullied and I really dislike the mean girl attitudes some quilters have. I occasionally have to remind people that we all can do whatever we like with our own fabric scraps.

We all have options, recycling your fabric scraps and giving them a second life to become something else is one of them. 100% cotton fabrics are compostable, just remember to remove any synthetic thread, buttons and zippers. It’s another reason why I use 100% cotton thread when sewing most things, it’s biodegradable.
