Never compare yourself to others
Let's take a moment to discuss self-deprecation and the habit of comparing oneself to others. It's essential to stop this behavior.
Every day, I come across posts from women showcasing their sewing spaces, which often begin with self-deprecating remarks, such as "my room isn't as nice as or as glamorous as..." I must admit that I find reading posts with this type of content to be quite disheartening. In my opinion, these women should take pride in themselves for creating a dedicated space for their craft instead of comparing themselves to others.
It's worth noting that no quilter or crafter begins with a perfectly designed room; it's a gradual process. Personally, my humble beginnings consisted of a couple of shelves in a narrow linen closet, which served as my craft space for over a decade. Later, I transitioned to a corner in the formal living room, where my husband built me an armoire. I was thrilled to have a neatly organized space that brought me joy. Eventually, I moved into my first dedicated "room," which was actually a utility closet without heating or air conditioning. I shared the space with the furnace and water heater, and we had to add lighting to make it functional. Despite its limitations, I was proud of my little creative space and worked there for six years.
Throughout my journey, I've never envied or compared myself to others, whether it's my quilting style, brand of sewing machine I own, or sewing room. I've always focused on being better than I was previously, continually seeking to learn new quilting patterns, techniques, and experimenting with fun fabrics. I apply this same mindset to other areas of my life, including trying new recipes. Some may not turn out as expected, but I view these experiences as valuable learning opportunities. I'm grateful for everything I have and encourage you to be proud of yourself. Refrain from comparing yourself to others, as there's truly no comparison. You, like me, are unique and one-of-a-kind – a unicorn 🦄.
