Finding Inspiration

The Evolution of My Secret Garden Sewing Room.

Have you ever had an inspirational photo that you kept for years? For me, it was this photo of a sewing room that Southern Fabric shared in 2019, featuring the sewing room of Angie Brandl Handmade. I encourage you to visit her Instagram page; her work is, in my opinion, incredible. Notably, little in her space has changed in the six years since Southern Fabric shared her photo.

For me, the inspiration focal point were those metal baskets on top of her fabric units and how she had her fabric scraps readily accessible and visible every time she entered her creative space.

In 2019, I had all of my cherished decorative items artistically arranged on top of my Kallax unit. I loved it; it was a collection of little pieces of my life that brought me joy. Then I saw that photo, and I knew right then that's how I wanted my room to feel - clean, focused, and without distractions. I had a small sewing room, and I was wasting valuable space on my display of artsy items. That's when I knew things would change. Home Goods provided the solution I needed! I had to visit two different store locations, but I managed to get the number of baskets I thought I needed. Interestingly, my metal baskets, while they are of the same style, are not all the same size. I instantly got to work on dismantling my display and sorting my fabric scraps. My space instantly felt more spacious.

Then, early in 2021, my husband told me he wanted to retire earlier than we had originally planned, and he wanted us to move down south and downsize significantly. While I knew that we wouldn’t get a house with a smaller sewing room, we'd definitely have a house with less square footage and fewer rooms. And never in my wildest dreams did I think that I'd get a sewing room the size of what I have now. Truly, this is a dream come true for me; it's truly my dream space. To this day, I still follow the same quilters who gave me that spark of inspiration to create a sewing room using my creativity and passion for fabrics. I now have a space that can host friends for sewing and crafting - entirely in that space! I'm truly thankful for my husband, who helped me design this space and was grateful for his foresight when it came to building this space, and yes, I really do feel ever so blessed. ❤️
